POLICE ADVISORY ON SCAMS INVOLVING THE SALE OF CONCERT TICKETS
TO HELP PREVENT FRAUDULENT TRANSACTIONS, THE POLICE WISH TO URGENTLY REMIND EVERYONE TO USE CAUTION WHEN SHOPPING ONLINE FOR CONCERT TICKETS. A SERIES OF EVENTS BY POPULAR INTERNATIONAL ARTISTS INCLUDING Ed Sheeran, Taylor Swift, Shinee and Bruno Mars are coming up in Singapore over the next several months. Over this period, from January 2023 to January 2024, more than 1,534 individuals have been victims of ticket scams with reported losses totaling $1.1 million.
Victims typically find listings for concert tickets on various online platforms such as Telegram, Carousell, X previously Twitter, Facebook, and Xiaohongshu. The scam often begins when interested shoppers contact the scammers via in-app messaging or WhatsAppTelegramWeChat to arrange payment detls after seeing a listing they desire. They are then directed to make payments using PayNow, bank transfers, or virtual credits like iTunes cards.
Unfortunately, once money is transferred to the scammer, additional requests for payments emerge, delivery delays occur, and communication ceases altogether. Some victims receive tickets that turn out to be invalid when atting concerts or discover no proof of authenticity from the scammers after paying.
To protect yourself agnst such scams, please consider the following safety tips:
SCAMSHIELD APP: Install ScamShield on your device to guard agnst scam calls and SMSes.
SET SECURITY FEATURES: Enhance online banking protection by setting transaction limits, enabling Two-Factor Authentication 2FA for banks and e-wallets.
RESEARCH THE SOURCE: Before purchasing tickets from third-party resellers, check official sources like www.scamalert.sg or call the Anti-Scam Helpline at 1800-722-6688 to verify authenticity. Purchase from authorized sellers such as Ticketmaster where ticket verification is provided and refunds are guaranteed if tickets prove invalid.
TIP OFF THE AUTHORITIES: Inform family, fris, and authorities about scams happening around you and report fraudulent listings on social media platforms.
