Article ## How Will Ticket Scalpers Navigate the Digital Age?
Not long ago, atting college football games became synonymous with navigating complex traffic patterns and hordes of shady-looking individuals with signs that read, “Tickets Needed!” These folks would typically hold about a dozen tickets in their hands, sparking curiosity as to why they needed so many especially for an underdog matchup agnst Vanderbilt.
The practice involved selling these tickets was once part of the game-day experience. However, its future may be uncertn as it faces potential extinction alongside the fax and typewriter era due to the rapid digital transformation brought on by COVID-19. The pandemic expedited a process already underway transitioning from traditional paper tickets to digital ticketing systems for nearly every college team, pro leagues, and even many high schools.
A major shift occurred as ticket takers evolved into ticket scanners, while physical scalping was left behind in the dustbin of history. Instead, one might now encounter someone shouting, “Downloads! I've got downloads; who needs them?” This new landscape requires an adaptation from those once accustomed to carrying a pile of tickets.
The introduction of digital ticketing systems has even penetrated the high school ranks. The Vicksburg Warren School District and similar entities utilize platforms like gofan.co for ticket sales, resulting in events selling out within minutes such as the recent varsity basketball game between Vicksburg and Warren Central that sold out in under an hour.
It’s only a matter of time before innovative individuals create secondary markets on digital platforms akin to Stubhub.com specifically for high school tickets. Scalpers will undoubtedly adapt, perhaps not in the most glamorous ways imaginable but rather in practical ones like managing a series of burner phones with ease.
