Carlos Simon's Fate Now Conquers was a groundbreaking work that premiered just as the world was turning upside down in 2020. The composition, originally commissioned for the Philadelphia Orchestra and scheduled to make its debut early in March, fell victim to the COVID-19 pandemic - much like the rest of society's plans at that time. Despite being unable to premiere live due to worldwide shutdowns, Fate Now Conquers still found itself making an impact by premiering digitally.
Before this, Carlos Simon was already on the rise as a young composer with an ear for social justice and influences spanning jazz, gospel, and contemporary classical music. His compositions are known for their ability to seamlessly bl themes of history, migration, belonging, and community into melodies that resonate across genres like film scores and concert hall performances.
As Simon's fame grew over the following years, so did his recognition as a beacon of African American contributions in classical music - something long overdue given the genre's rich heritage. This was reflected when he was named one of the recipients for the 2021 Sphinx Medal of Excellence and became Composer-in-Residence at the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts.
In early June, Colorado Symphony announced that audiences would have a unique opportunity to experience Fate Now Conquers during their opening performances of the Centennial Season in September 2023. The orchestra will be performing this work alongside other iconic compositions like Brahms' First Piano Concerto and Beethoven's Fifth Symphony at Boettcher Concert Hall.
Carlos Simon's musical journey, marked by profound compositions that reflect his social justice advocacy, serves as a testament to the power of music in expressing complex emotions. With its masterful orchestration, intricate harmonies, rich melodies, and emotional depth, Fate Now Conquers is set to be a moving experience for those fortunate enough to hear it live.
Do not miss this opportunity to witness history being made during Colorado Symphony's Centennial Season opener on September 15-17.
